NC LIGHTHOUSE EXPLORER PATCH
REQUIREMENTS TO EARN OUR BEAUTIFUL EMBROIDERED NC LIGHTHOUSE EXPLORER PATCH.
PURPOSE:
The purpose of the Outer Banks Lighthouse Society (OBLHS) NC Lighthouse Explorer Patch Program is to educate young people on the role of lighthouses in North Carolina. Students will learn about the history of lighthouses, what a keeper's life was like, and the importance of the preservation of lighthouses for future generations to enjoy and learn.
REQUIREMENTS:
To earn the OBLHS patch, the participant must complete 7 of the 10 listed activities (activities 2, 3, 7, and 8 required).
Activity 1: List the types of lighthouses found in North Carolina. How are they different? Why?
Activity 2: Tour at least three of the North Carolina lighthouses. Climb at least one.
Activity 3 (required): On a North Carolina map, mark where each lighthouse by name is located.
Activity 4: Learn why lighthouses are painted differently and find the term that is used for this difference.
Activity 5: Learn about the life of a lighthouse keeper, including their duties, daily routine, family life, and pastimes.
Activity 6: Research the Fresnel lens, including who created it, its levels of intensity, what flash patterns are, and
where you can see a lens.
Activity 7 (required): Do a service project of your choice that would help preserve a lighthouse or spread the
information of lighthouse preservation projects.
Activity 8 (required): Read one nonfiction book about the history of lighthouses and lightships. Read one fiction book
about growing up at a lighthouse.
Activity 9: Learn about lighthouse culture by listening to sailor music or studying an artwork related to lighthouses
and the sea.
Activity 10: Research the history of the Outer Banks Lighthouse Society. Learn about activities the Society has been
involved in.
The completed activities should be documented by journal writing about the experience and photos documenting completion of the activities. All documentation must be emailed to education@oblhs.com with complete name and address. Upon receipt of these documents, the patch will be mailed to the address given.
